We have all heard the saying ‘Forgive and Forget’ and most of us would agree it is easier said than done. What we may be failing to realise though is that by continuing to hold resentment towards someone holds us in an energetic and emotional bond with that person. While we harbour emotions we keep the file open in our mind and the person/situation present in our consciousness. Forgiveness truly is the gift we give ourselves.
As you can see by the above definitions forgiveness is not the process of condoning and excusing. Many people feel that to forgive would be to bury what happened in the sand. More often than not though the person we are holding resentment against is actually unaware and is getting on with their life, while you remain stuck in a past experience. Allowing this experience to influence your decisions, your moods, your relationships etc. Even more importantly, often the person you need to forgive is YOU.
So you decide, “Yes, I do want to forgive and move forward, free of this resentment.” The next question is, “How?”
