NATURAL IMMUNE HEALTH

The common cold is a mild viral infection of the upper respiratory tract.  There are over 200 viruses that can cause a cold.  A ‘cure’ for the common cold does not seem possible because of the enormous number of viruses and the way they can mutate in order to survive.  

A cold is a mild disease that can be seen as a way or priming and strengthening young and immature immune systems.  Always protecting your children from minor infections such as colds may help the development of a healthy and robust immune system that can fight off the stronger, more aggressive infections.

Symptoms

  • Sore throat
  • Sneezing
  • Watery eyes
  • Runny nose – clear, watery, and often copious at first, becoming thick and white as the infection starts to clear
  • Irritating cough
  • Slight temperature
  • Tiredness
  • Loss of appetite

Infection is spread via droplets that are passed from the hands to the mouth and nose or through the air from sneezing and coughing.

A child is most contagious when the mucous secretions are thin and watery, composed almost entirely of viral discharge.  The least contagious stage is when the secretions turn thick and yellowy-white.

Complete recovery takes about five to ten days.

Complications Pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, and ear infections.

What to do about them?

Rest and relaxation.  Keep the child’s body energy for fighting the infection.

Fresh air.  Breathing clean fresh air is important for the health and vitality of the child’s respiratory system.  Avoid stuffy overheated rooms.

Avoid the child getting cold by getting him to wear warm shoes, hats and scarfs and not to go outside after dusk.

Avoid medications that dry mucous or suppress a cough.  It is much healthier for the body to release infected mucous via coughing.

Diet should be light and liquid foods are the most gentle and therapeutic when fighting an infection. Soups, casseroles, homemade juices and homemade ice blocks.

Diet – includes lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Good protein sources – eggs, meat, chicken, fish, legumes, good quality bread such a stoneground bread.  All Regular cow’s milk products can be highly allergenic for some and can be very mucous forming.  Some good alternatives to dairy are goat’s milk products, coconut based products and nut or oat milks.  

Minimal sugar.  Sugar is a major immune suppressant as it reduces the number and effectiveness of white blood cells.  

White flour and anything made from it, acts just like sugar in the body.  It breaks down quickly and raises insulin levels.  White flour products do not contain any nutritional value.
